Every trade has its tools. If this were a traditional newsletter about the entertainment industry, we’d talk about how to write scripts or songs, how to act, how to make movies, or raise financing. But this isn’t a traditional entertainment organization.

As you embark on this journey, you’re no longer merely an artist / entertainment professional — you’re a disciple of enlightened entertainment, a sacred storyteller in training (or whatever term works for you).

You may look like everyone else, but you’re on a different mission. Your performances, movies, music, and other media may seem similar to others — they’ll be entertaining, technically and artistically proficient, and have all the bells and whistles of mainstream media (if you desire) — but these creations will carry a different vibration, an energy of transformation that will seep into the hearts and souls of the audience, while their senses are dazzled by the sights and sounds.

You will not be distracting them from their life, but bringing them into a deeper connection with it.

The tools I will be laying out over the next several issues will help lay the foundation for the work you are undertaking. You can find some version of these tools in just about every great religion or world philosophy, so if you don’t like how I describe or define them, and you want to try something different, go ahead — as long as the basic result is the same.

However you approach these, in whatever religion, philosophy, or self-help book, you need to practice them regularly, make them a part of your daily lifestyle. That’s what a master does.

“I’m too busy for this,” you might say. While these exercises do take time, by practicing them you actually create more time. Time seems to expand; you get more done in a shorter span. It’s like an investment that builds passive income (income that flows in even when you’re not working). At first, you have to work hard to build it and you don’t always see immediate results. Then momentum kicks in and you begin getting back much more than you’re putting in.

Another analogy is the Chinese bamboo tree. The first four years, you water and nurture it, and it only sprouts a small bulb and tiny shoots. Your efforts seem futile. Then in the fifth year it shoots up eighty feet or more! All that time it was simply building a sufficient root system capable of sustaining its majestic heights.

As you go through these processes, you might think “What does all this have to do with the entertainment industry?” Or “How is this going to help me be more successful?” When you were in school, studying math, you might have thought “Why do I need to learn this if I’m going to be an actor, writer, or studio exec (fuzzy math, maybe)?” And if you decided not to learn it, you might be struggling in the area of finances right now.

Even if these don’t seem directly related to how you’re going to get that next audition or writing gig, they are laying a foundation that will allow you to manifest a more prosperous, purposeful, empowered career. They’ll also make you much more creative.

Spiritual Tools of an “Enlightened Entertainer”, Part I

Insight Meditation

Meditation in its simplest terms is a tool that allows you to connect with your Authentic Self, Higher Self, Buddha Nature, God-Self (or whatever term you prefer). The form of meditation you use isn’t nearly as important as the purity of your intention and the clarity of purpose — to connect with your ultimate ground of being.

I won’t get into a whole meditation program here. Suffice it to say that if you decide to master the art of meditation, you might want to take classes or read books dedicated to it. Nevertheless, this will lay out the basics if you’re just getting started, and perhaps give you a few new insights if you already have a practice in place.

There are many kinds of meditation, maybe an unlimited variety. Insight Meditation, or Vipassana, as it is also called, is pretty simple. There are no mantras, like in TM (Transcendental Meditation), however, you can use one if you choose. The basic practice here is to close your eyes, follow your breath, and maintain dominion over your attention as you sink beneath layers of mind-chatter, into the exquisite stillness of your spirit -- a stillness so profound that even one moment of it can transform your life.
